Ahhhh Mom, do I have to??

You’d be asked to clean your room or eat your peas and you’d say, ‘do I have to?’
I think – as speakers – we need to be asking that more often.
When you walk around at conferences or speaker events, you’ll hear ‘you have to’ do this and ‘you have to’ do that.
For instance one speaker tells people that ‘you have to’ have a tip list and a photo on your business card. Do you? What if your business card was actually different than everyone else’s? Maybe it’s not even a card, maybe it’s a mini dvd or a memory stick instead?
‘You have to’ have a printed one sheet? Do you? Do your clients know how to print from the internet? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe you work with bureaus and they require it? You need to find out.
‘You have to’ have a demo video? Do you? Does your market demand it? Are you working with bureaus and they demand it?
‘You have to’ speak for free for at least a year before you can get paid. Really? If you have confidence in your value moving into the marketplace, then perhaps that is not true for you.
Look at the people who are giving you the advice.
Are their calendars full? Are they earning big bucks?
Pick a person to emulate, say Jordan Brown (awesome fictitious speaker) and start asking yourself, ‘what would Jordan do’?
There are many people giving advice in this business, pick your advisors well, and even then take the advice and assess it based on your goals and strategy.
And, if everyone else is doing it, that might be a great reason to do something else!
