While incidents like the one that happened not too long ago when several of the major hosting companies went down because of a technical glitch with their mutual parent company are a very, rare occurrence, there are times when we pop the URL to our website in the browser simply to watch the little icon spin and spin – only to result in that dreaded message telling you your website is down. The first thing that pops into your mind is “is this issue on my end? Or is the whole network down?”
During times like these it’s nice to have a few tools in your toolbox to help diagnose and troubleshoot the situation.
Sucuri SiteCheck: A free security check tool you can use to check for known malware, blacklisting status, website errors, and out-of-date software by typing in the URL to your site and clicking the “Scan Website” button. A report wi ll appear on the Sucuri site within minutes, giving your website a clean bill of health, or pinpointing known issues. If your website is infected in one way or another, Sucuri also has an option to help you clean things up, with prices ranging from $89-$289 a year (depending how many websites you want covered).
IsUp.me: IsUp.me allows you to check other sites or your own to determine if your site is the problem or if the entire network is down.
Fiddler Web Debugging Proxy: A free tool that can be used to debug HTTP traffic from any web browser.
