This past month my Tuesday blog posts have been about some of the signs that you might need a website (WordPress) makeover, and website security and performance. In light of that, I thought it apropos that I let you know about my top 5 security and performance plugins and services of choice.
Here they are in no special order!
CloudFlare: Many hosting companies offer CloudFlare to their customers as an additional service. Sometimes free of charge, sometimes at a nominal cost. Either way, I prefer to go straight to the source – you sign up at CloudFlare and then install the CloudFlare WordPress plugin. You’ll get a faster site, optimized loading on mobile and computers, security protection from online threats, DDos Protection, and super fast DNS service.
GM Block Bots: You know how excited you get when you take a look at your stats and see a huge amount of traffic for a specific page or post? Then you realize it’s not real traffic after all; just the work of those pesky little bots searching your site. This handy little plugin blocks all of those nasty bots from plaguing your website, and prevents them from showing up in your Google Analytics stats. The list of bots it blocks continues to grow with each plugin update.Website security is no joke and neither is an unoptimized site that takes forever to load.Click To Tweet
Login LockDown: Website security is no joke. Hackers are always trying to get into your site. They start with using “admin” as the user ID – but I’m sure you’re not still doing that are you? Then they systematically go through what they think you might have used as a password. This is another great reason not to use something like 12345 or your pet’s name for your password, and not to use the same one for all of your passwords. Login Lockdown helps lock things down even tighter and prevents hackers from accessing your site through the login panel by limiting the number of login attempts from a given IP range within a certain time period.
VaultPress: My backup service of choice and a great addition for additional website security! Among the many features and benefits of VaultPress, it monitors your backup activity in real time, scans your site daily for dangerous files, restores backups automatically, makes it easy for you to review and fix threats by clicking a button, and automatically fixes dangerous threats. Backups are created every hour, every day, so you don’t have to worry about losing a lot of information and content you did earlier in the week. It’s super easy to restore too! I pay $15 a month for the service, but it is worth every penny. Set up your account, install the plugin and let VaultPress do the work!
W3 Total Cache: I don’t know all of the ins and outs of what this plugin does, but I do know it provides easy web performance optimization (WPO) using caching and is designed to improve user experience and page speed. And, my site runs better and faster because of it!
What are your must-have security and performance plugins? Do you even have security and performance plugins installed? If not, just schedule a quick chat with us to discuss making your site safer and faster!
